Paddlesport Leader Course
Ready to lead others on the water?
If you love paddling and want to share your passion by guiding others safely on the water, the Paddlesport Leader Award is your next step. This nationally recognised qualification from PaddleUK (formerly British Canoeing) gives you the confidence and skills to lead enjoyable, safe, and rewarding journeys in canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, or mixed craft on sheltered water.
Whether you want to support your local club, outdoor centre, or simply lead friends and family, this course helps you become the leader others trust to create great days on the water.
Why Become a Paddlesport Leader?
The Paddlesport Leader Award is open to all paddlers — it’s about developing your ability to lead people, not just paddle craft. You’ll learn to plan and deliver safe, fun trips that suit your group’s needs, abilities, and aspirations.
This qualification is widely used by clubs, outdoor centres, and activity providers across the UK, and supports you to lead groups in canoes, kayaks, SUPs, or mixed craft. It’s a flexible, progressive award designed to recognise and enhance your existing skills, helping you shape your own leadership journey through both formal training and real-world experience.
What a Paddlesport Leader Can Do
As a qualified Paddlesport Leader, you can:
- - Lead safe and enjoyable journeys in sheltered water environments
- - Work independently or be deployed by a club, centre, or organisation
- - Lead groups in single or tandem craft, including canoes, kayaks, and SUPs
- - Deliver Paddle Start and Paddle Discover Awards (with the appropriate additional experience or qualifications)
- - Create memorable experiences for paddlers of all ages and abilities
Your trips might be about education, social adventure, exploration, or confidence-building — whatever the aim, you’ll be equipped to lead them safely and effectively.
Preparing for the Course
You don’t need to hold any specific awards before becoming a Paddlesport Leader, but you should be confident paddling independently in sheltered water.
To get the most from the course, we recommend completing the Paddle Explore Award or having equivalent experience beforehand. This ensures you can focus fully on developing your leadership and rescue skills, rather than your basic paddling ability.
If you’re unsure of your readiness, you can discuss your current level with your course provider or review the Paddlesport Leader Skills Checklist before booking.
