Whether you’re new to paddling or already enjoying time on the water, the Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Coursegives you the essential knowledge and practical skills to handle common challenges safely and effectively. Designed by PaddleUK, this hands-on training is ideal for anyone who paddles kayaks, canoes, or stand-up paddleboards in sheltered water environments.

 

Course Overview

This one-day (approximately six-hour) practical course focuses on keeping both you and others safe on the water. You’ll learn simple, effective rescue techniques, develop your understanding of safety frameworks, and gain confidence in making good decisions when things don’t go as planned.

There’s no formal assessment—just relaxed, supportive learning with plenty of opportunities to practise and ask questions. By the end of the course, you’ll leave feeling more prepared, capable, and ready to paddle responsibly.

 

What You’ll Learn

The course is structured around six key modules:

  1. Clothing and Equipment
    • Understanding craft features and key safety considerations
    • Selecting appropriate clothing and safety gear
    • Exploring additional safety equipment and its uses
  2. Safety Frameworks
    • Assessing sheltered water conditions and weather factors
    • Learning essential safety principles and rescue protocols
    • Understanding how and when to call for help
  3. Contact and Towing Rescues
    • Techniques for helping swimmers and recovering equipment
    • Using contact and towing methods safely and effectively
  4. Self-Rescues
    • Developing confidence in self-rescue situations
    • Practising assisted self-rescues
  5. Deep Water Rescues
    • Working with various craft types
    • Safely recovering swimmers from the water
    • Managing multiple rescues and dealing with unresponsive paddlers
  6. Reflection and Development
    • Reviewing personal learning and identifying next steps
    • Building an action plan to continue developing your safety skills
